Lesson plan

The lesson plan will give you an idea of what you will be learning during your driving course, we will cover many different situations as they arise. But the following list of topics will be the main ones we will be dealing with on your lessons. You must remember that no matter how long you have been driving there is always some new kind of situation you will come across and you will learn from it for the next time.

Cockpit drill : Deals with how to set the car up for you. The controls : Explains the use and functions of the main driving controls.

Move off and stop : You will learn how to move away from the kerb side into your driving position safely and under control, and then move the car back to the kerb stopping under full control. Also we will look at moving off at an angle, (behind parked car) uphill and downhill.

Emerging from T junctions : You will be able to identify different types of junctions and how to deal with them safely e.g. give way, stop, unmarked and the difference between open and closed junctions.

Turning left and right : Deals with turning left and right from a major road into a minor road, deciding what speed to use and what gear, Is it safe to turn, do I have to stop.

Making progress and normal driving position : looks at why it is important to make progress, not driving to slow. Driving in the right position and why it is important.

Meeting other traffic : Explains how to react to other cars coming towards you on different types of roads from just keeping in your driving position to making decisions whether or not you have to stop and give way.

Various types of crossroads : Deals with crossroads and the different kinds, how to emerge and who has priority e.g. give way, stop, unmarked and open and closed crossroads.

Roundabouts : Looks at roundabouts how to use them safely, when to go, when to stop, which lane you should be in and the different kinds of roundabouts.

Pedestrian crossings : Explains how to deal with different types of pedestrian crossings, from who has priority, to when be it safe to go.

Over taking other road users : You will be looking at the safe over taking of other road users from cars, lorries, Pedestrians and animals all which have to be dealt with differently.

Country roads : There are a lot of differences between town driving and country road driving, higher speed limit, large slow moving vehicles, narrow roads, passing places, dead ground, and lots of blind bends just to mention a few.

Duel carriageways : Duel carriageways are high speed multi lane roads where the two carriageways are separated by a central reservation. They demand particular skills, including judgment and planning, separation distance, overtaking, lane discipline and the use of speed.

Manoeuvres : You will learn all the manoeuvres required for your driving test e.g. reverse left, reverse parking, bay parking, turn in the road and the emergency stop. All the above will be covered but may not be in the same order as stated.
