Riding high on the feel good factor from passing your test? It gets even better, because you can skip some of the expense of getting on the road by taking a short driving course with no test at the end.

The pass plus scheme was introduced by the driving standards agency due to the high number of new drivers being involved in accidents. The course aims to develop the attitudes and skills that you already have to a higher level that are essential for safe driving in to days environment.

Since the course was introduced there has been a large reduction in the number of accidents involving new drivers that have taken the pass plus course. Some of the skills you will be learning you may not have yet come across depending on where you learned to drive.

The pass plus course should be taken within one year of passing your driving test, not only will it improve your over all driving, some insurance companies offer discounts on your insurance if the course is taken. The pass plus course consists of six modules and it must take a minimum of six hours to complete the course.

 

THE MODULES

 

Frost

1 Town driving : Driving in town can be a frightening experience, nose to tail traffic, complicated junctions, roundabouts and pedestrians that don't look.

2 All weather driving : Find out how to drive in all weather conditions e.g. rain, fog, bright sunshine, snow and ice.

3 Out of town driving & rural roads : Out of town driving can be just as daunting as driving in the city just different problems like hidden junctions, horse riders, slow moving farm vehicles, dead ground, sharp bends, animals in the road and the higher speed limit.

4 Night driving : Driving at night can be very scary for the first time, will I be able to see, will others be able to see me. You will be looking at judging distance and speed, safe use of the lights, pedestrians at night and were its safe and legal to park during hours of darkness.

5 Dual carriageways : Dual carriageways are fast moving multi lane roads with roads that can join from both sides. You need good judgment of speed and distance and observations to proceed on them safely.

6 Motorways : Motorway driving is unlike any other due to the number of lanes and volume of traffic and the high speed. Motorways have there own rules , regulations and signs that govern them.

We will look at planning a journey, safe speeds , observations, separation distance and the full use of the "M S M" routine.

The pass plus course is not a test, but more an evaluation by your instructor who, when satisfied that you are competent in each of the above modules will issue your pass plus certificate.

The pass plus course carries a higher hourly rate than normal driving lessons because of the increase in mileage covered while doing the course. The cost of the course can be more than redeemed if you take out insurance with one of the insurance companies involved with the scheme.
