The Theory Test

The theory test can be taken from the age of 17 and must be passed before a practical driving test can be booked. When you are booking your practical driving test you will be asked for the pass certificate number.

The driving test theory test consists of two parts the theory and the hazard perception both parts must be passed at the same time. Before the test starts you will be given instructions on how the test works.

Multiple choice

You can choose to go through a practice set of multiple choice questions to get used to the test. When the practices questions have finished the real test will begin. You will be asked a question and several answer options will appear on screen you have to select the right answer.

On some questions you may be asked for more than one answer to the question. You will be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes you work your way through the questions any you are not sure about flag them. You will be able to go back to them at any time during the 57 Minutes.

The pass mark for the multiple choice questions test is 43 out of 50.

Hazard perception

The hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips showing road scenes that have developing hazards within them. You have to click the mouse when you see this happening the sooner you click the more marks you will get the top mark being 5 and the least being 0.

In each clip there will be at least one devolving hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. You will not be able to go over your answers to your hazard perception test; as on the road, you will only have one chance to respond to the hazard. In order to pass the hazard perception part of your theory test you will have to score 44 out of 75.

What is a developing hazard?

As an example of developing hazards you see a parked car at the side of the road, it is doing nothing. If you were to click now you would score nothing. However if you get closer the right hand signal comes on leading you to believe that the car is about to move away, the hazard is now developing so you should now click.

As you get closer to the car it starts moving away at this point you should click again as the hazard has developed further.
